Welcome to our fourth annual list of top legal softwares. Once again, we’ll be breaking down for you several of the best software platforms for attorneys, and providing you with information on all of their recent product developments. We’ll also be talking to some of the people behind these incredible products, and getting a sneak preview at what their companies have planned for the rest of 2020 and beyond.
For lawyers, there has perhaps never been a more important time to start equipping your firm with reliable softwares, as the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly disrupted our usual way of doing things, and has placed a greater importance on being able to work virtually. We don’t know what the future holds for attorneys and the way they operate, but we do know that the softwares on this list can make life significantly easier for lawyers and their staff moving forward.
On this year’s list, you’ll find eight returning softwares from last year, as well as three newcomers. We hope the information in this piece will inspire you in making your next legal software purchase, and provide you with the knowledge necessary to pick the perfect program for your firm.

What makes Clio a great investment for this new decade of law?
"Clio's cloud-based products are easy to set up and use, making them ideal, affordable solutions for law firms of all sizes. By providing law firms the means to improve the affordability and quality of legal services, Clio is helping transform the practice of law to benefit both lawyers and their clients.
A tangible example of this is the fact that lawyers can store all of their client data securely in Clio. Not only are law firms getting industry-leading levels of security (256-bit encryption, biometric security cards, 24/7 security presence, and 100% security camera coverage) through a trusted provider as part of their monthly package, they don't require the same square footage in a large office for storing physical files."
How will using Clio products make an attorney’s day-to-day life easier?
"The Clio Suite centralizes all matter and client information into one central database, making it quick and easy to access from anywhere using a web browser or Clio’s dedicated mobile app. Time tracking, billing, and collections are seamlessly integrated, ensuring that all billable time gets captured within an invoice that can be generated in seconds. Clio also makes it easy to follow-up with anyone reaching out to the firm, helping ensure that every potential client gets the attention they need.
Clio also offers over 200 integration partners, meaning you can integrate the product with email, calendaring, or bookkeeping software you already use. This makes it incredibly easy to keep a record of all email communications while managing the firm’s accounting from one central operating system."
Last year your company added Clio Grow to the family. How has the transition gone, and what sort of feedback are you getting back from your users on the addition?
"The launch of Clio Grow has been an exciting addition to Clio’s product offerings, and has been a huge benefit to both existing and new Clio customers.
Specifically, Clio Grow’s client relationship management and intake workflows have streamlined new client intake. Where firms typically spent days coordinating an initial consultation and intake, Clio Grow brings this process down to minutes. The software’s automated scheduling features and electronic intake forms can be easily shared through email.
Using Clio Grow, law firms can improve client communications and follow-up by helping manage relationships prior to them becoming clients. Keeping conversations organized and efficient means it is easier to be responsive. Being able to set up automated reminders for potential clients also helps create a better experience for clients working with the firm—and has helped firms reduce no-show rates from ~25% to less than 5%. You can read more about how our clients have benefitted from Clio Grow here."
What’s next for Clio?
"Clio is fast becoming the operating system for legal, and we look forward to expanding our capabilities to improving both firm performance and client experiences. We’re focused on improving firm efficiencies and workflows that keep legal professionals focused on the work that matters. Building on that, we want to help law firms develop new and innovative client experiences that result in better satisfaction and referrals down the road."

What makes Filevine a great investment for this new decade of law?
"There’s no question that 2020 is rapidly ushering in a new decade of change. Simply put, Filevine is the most customizable, feature-rich, and scalable cloud-based case management software on the market. When you invest in Filevine, you’re investing in your firm’s future. You’re partnering with software that is always on the cutting-edge of technology, built with a secure foundation on the world’s most trusted cloud platform: Amazon Web Services (AWS)."
How will using Filevine make an attorney’s day-to-day life easier?
"Filevine was built to solve a core problem that every lawyer faces: there are simply too many inputs coming at them every day—emails, phone calls, text messages, instant messages, people dropping by the office, even faxes. On top of that, assignments given out to team members fall through the cracks or have no good way to be followed up upon. There’s a complex deluge of information with correlating actions that need to be taken upon that information. Filevine brings all of this together into a single platform to reduce the friction between thought and action so your team always stays in alignment."
What updates have been made to Filevine over the last year?
"It’s nearly impossible to encapsulate every feature released over the last year. Some of the biggest have to include Filevine Fusion and OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Fusion enables users to instantly create perfectly formatted, infinitely customizable, and data-enriched documents with a single click. OCR ensures that every document or image uploaded to Filevine can be indexed and made searchable. Need to find every document associated with a specific street name? Not only can you find it across all of your documents and PDFs, but with OCR, Filevine can even read the street signs in your pictures so they too can be made instantly available. Both of these updates are massive game-changers."
What’s next for Filevine?
"Filevine’s updates are second to none. We love the notion that when a customer signs up with Filevine, they’re entering into a long-term partnership. We’re obsessively dedicated to making the product they buy today not only the right value for their firm now, but something that will continuously surprise and delight them with new features over time. I can’t share specific announcements just yet, but I will say this: there’s a reason Filevine is called the operating core for legal and 2020 is going to be a very big year for Filevine customers. In the near term, users can expect better customizability, more seamless integrations, and even more robust controls over their data."

LawPay
Online Payment Technology Software
Offering online payment options is a must for law firms that are looking to get paid faster and provide a quality experience for their clients. Lawyers won’t find a more reliable online payment software then LawPay, which has been recommended by 50 state bars and 60 local and specialty bars as a trusted solution for their members. Using LawPay ensures your firm can always easily accept new debit and credit card payments, while remaining in compliance with ABA and IOLTA guidelines.
LawPays's Top Features
- Allows lawyers to send their clients payment requests (which can be completed with just a click), and monitor the status of any outstanding payment requests.
- Offers secure mobile technology, which attorneys can use to send bills, monitor transactions and accept payments directly from their mobile devices.
- Gives law firms the ability to create custom payment pages right on their website, which can be personalized with the company’s business information and logo.
Checking in with Annie Pace
Annie Pace
Assistant Brand Manager at LawPay
What makes LawPay a great investment for this new decade of law?
"Technology isn’t going anywhere, and recent studies suggest that almost 80% of adults prefer to pay for goods and services by credit or debit card. Clients want options, and if you cannot provide those options to them, they might just move on to someone who can.
Clients also want to be able to pay in real-time, meaning when they get an invoice, they can immediately turn around and pay it. They don’t want to have to fish out their checkbook or postage stamps just to get a payment in the mail to their lawyer. This is also great for you as the attorney - you get your money faster, and without any additional steps needed on your part to get the funds. In addition, given what’s been happening in the age of COVID-19, the preference to pay online isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
In addition to this being convenient for the client, paying by card is also convenient for you. For example, say mediation is tomorrow and you need to get the mediation fee from your client, you can simply send your client a LawPay link so that they can pay you immediately and you can get your funds, rather than you fronting the fee and praying that the client pays you back after mediation.
Bottom line, you can get paid faster, easier, and provide a benefit that your client actually wants with LawPay."
How will using LawPay make an attorney’s day-to-day life easier?
"Bill collecting, although necessary, is not something that every attorney or office administrator wants to spend a lot of time on. After all, time spent chasing down clients for their payments takes away from potential billable hours.
LawPay can help save you time and the eventual headaches that can accompany tracking down your money. You can get paid as soon as you send out an invoice, so the 'check’s in the mail' excuse will never be a viable explanation from your client. LawPay also makes it easier to get your cases started - clients can pay by card immediately after their initial client consultation, so you’re not waiting for a check to clear before you begin work on their case. No more waiting for a check to clear before you file your client’s petition."
What updates have been made to LawPay over the last year?
"On the technology front, we’ve added new features and enhancements throughout the last year. We kicked the year off by adding eCheck as another payment method for attorneys at 0% processing. This means that attorneys can accept payment from their clients by card AND by their bank account. We also developed a Google Chrome Extension for our customers. With this extension, you have instant access to your payment pages right from your Chrome browser without having to log in. This means being able to access and send your payment links to clients with just a click of a button. Additionally, we’ve enhanced our existing Scheduled Payments function by expanding the intervals you can select for schedules to recur (e.g. monthly, weekly, bimonthly…), adding more options to our 'end' criteria, and redesigning the interface to be more user friendly.
On the non-technology front, we’ve developed and enhanced programs to keep our customers engaged and informed of legal industry topics. We’ve created a 'Coffee with LawPay' webcast program that runs monthly to connect with our users, share legal insights and tips, and answer customer questions in real time. Additionally, we’ve continued to roll out our CLEs with Claude Ducloux and even enhanced the program by recording Claude himself and creating a new 'look and feel.'"
What’s next for LawPay?
"We have a few new initiatives in the pipeline that we’re excited about.
First, we continue to build out our technology partner ecosystem to ensure that LawPay allows you to easily accept payments in all the tools attorneys use to manage their business. One example is ClientRock, a legal-specific sSignature and scheduling product that enables firms to take payments through their LawPay account.
Next, we are improving our offering to larger firms through our Custom Solutions team. This team works directly with large firms to build custom solutions that seamlessly integrate payments into the law firm's preferred workflows and applications.
Finally, we are always eager to give our customers up-to-date and relevant information and resources during these challenging times. We’ve done this by expanding our continuing education offerings and offering content specific to the challenges of working remotely."

The right legal technology will determine the success - or failure - of a business, especially given the current economic uncertainty and public health crisis.
The events of 2020 have underscored how important it is for law firms to be technology-forward. There is no better or more important time for firms to upgrade their case management software. CASEpeer allows firms to be completely paperless, allowing attorneys and staff to transition seamlessly between the office and at home.

Law firms can implement CASEpeer quickly, and immediately benefit from all of the tools tailored to the day-to-day operations of a personal injury practice.
It starts with the basics. Effective communication and accountability are key to any successful business. "Over the last year, CASEpeer’s focus has been accountability. We added new reports, tracking features, and oversight tools for firm managers and administrators. With these tools, firms large and small can meticulously monitor operations, and make informed decisions about the future of their practice."
What’s next for CASEpeer?
"The CASEpeer development team has a lot planned for the next six months including new features and integrations. In the next few weeks, we are releasing an integration with Soluno, an accounting solution designed just for law firms. The integration eliminates double entry and offers a robust and IOLTA compliant alternative to other mainstream accounting solutions."

What makes Zola Suite a great investment for this new decade of law?
"With an even greater emphasis on efficiency, collaboration and security, this decade of law will challenge legal tech providers to think bigger and bolder than ever before. We’re up to the challenge.
We’re consistently growing alongside our users, listening to their unique needs and implementing new tools that will improve their practice and help them work smarter and faster. In 2019 alone, we made 856 updates to our platform to help users deliver better results to their clients in less time.
As remote work becomes more commonplace in the legal industry, firms can access all of their data from anywhere in the world with our cloud-based solution, allowing them to stay connected and productive at all times. And with more accessibility, firms won’t have to worry about increased security risks. Our experienced security team employs state-of-the-art technology to routinely check for potential vulnerabilities in our systems and fix them before they can impact firm operations."
How will using Zola Suite make an attorney’s day-to-day life easier?
"Our platform doesn’t rely on clunky integrations to help firms manage day-to-day tasks like sending emails, generating invoices, scheduling meetings and sharing documents with clients. This means that our clients have a single, easy-to-use dashboard, one set of login credentials and one monthly bill – we believe in harnessing the “power of one” to maximize efficiency and profitability.
Our platform wasn’t just designed with efficiency in mind, it was designed to help attorneys and support staff reduce errors in the hundreds of actions they take throughout the day. A perfect example of this is our Smart Suggest email feature. When drafting a new email in a matter, Zola Suite suggests individuals who are listed as contacts for the matter (along with their respective roles) so you don’t have that moment of panic when you realize you sent a motion to the wrong “Michael.” At the same time you’re drafting and reading matter-related email, Zola Suite is generating a new time entry for your work, so you don’t forget to bill for every task you do throughout the day."
What updates have been made to Zola Suite over the last year?
- Custom matter views
- Rules-based calendaring
- Department- and location-based accounting

10to8
Appointment Scheduling Software
When investing in 10to8’s software, you’ll be getting much more than just a simple scheduling tool. The platform offers a wide collection of helpful integrations, allows attorneys to communicate directly with those booking appointments, and includes powerful data reporting.

- Allows lawyers to create online booking pages with consistent branding, which their clients can use to book and manage their own appointments.
- Gives users the ability to send SMS, email, and voice call reminders so that clients confirm and remember their appointments.
- Offers native integrates with Zoom Video Conferencing and Salesforce.
Checking in with Anna Kocsis
Anna Kocsis
Digital Marketing Executive at 10to8
What makes 10to8 a great investment for this new decade?
"10to8 is a highly-customizable coordination tool that can be tailored to any legal practice’s needs. The current situation caused by the pandemic pushed most of the world to the virtual space and to a remote working setup, however, once the pandemic is over, this might change again. 10to8 is a product that is flexible and helps businesses adapt to unexpected situations and so can be a vital part of a legal practice’s business contingency plan.
We always look for ways to improve the software so it meets the latest technology trends and requirements. Individual tools that only take care of one task and don’t communicate with other systems are not efficient or cost-effective. This is why 10to8 was developed to integrate easily with other tools and so it can fit in very well with an attorney’s workflow."
How will using 10to8 make a busy attorney’s day-to-day life easier?
"In short, 10to8 makes appointments happen. 10to8 will make it easy for attorneys to arrange initial consultations, appointments with clients, and even internal meetings with co-workers and partners. Attorneys can set up a large variety of services to schedule 1-to-1 consultations in person or online, meetings with clients that require multiple staff members to be present, or fully internal appointments.
With 10to8, clients no longer have to schedule appointments via email or phone, they can do it online without wasting the time of (a firm’s) administrative staff. The automated reminders keep everybody in the loop. The 2-way calendar sync with Outlook, Exchange, Office 365, and other popular calendar apps eliminates double-bookings. And just like that, appointments will happen, come rain or shine."
What updates have been made to 10to8 over the last year?
"We release new features every single month. Some of the most robust improvements of the last year were the new time zone feature that can handle staff spread across multiple time zones. Service grouping, multiple booking pages, and even more customization options on reminders are just a few of the many other feature releases we had.
We worked a lot on compliance too. After GDPR back in 2018, we dove into HIPAA, CCPA and, we also received our ISO 27001 certificate at the beginning of 2020. Security is something that we take very seriously."
What’s next for 10to8?
"We are always looking to improve in the direction that our customers benefit the most of. We are currently working on the user experience of the product, such as simplifying it for non-administrative staff.
We are just days away from releasing another big feature that will allow multiple clients to join an appointment. This will predominantly be useful for education institutions that want to host classes via 10to8, but we also think that it will be useful for arranging board meetings and other events that more people outside of the company will need to join."

VP of Growth at Litify
What makes Litify a great investment for this new decade of law?
"The traditional methods of managing a law firm are getting left in the dust. It’s no longer good enough to manage your entire firm through a combination of physical document storage system, mix & match task management spreadsheets and siloed matter management processes.
In 2020 and beyond, law firms need a cloud-based platform solution they can use to manage their entire practice in one location online. This means your entire practice will no longer be tied to one expensive office building with outdated, on-premise security systems and no flexibility on where you and your team can work.
Remote work is here to stay, and Litify is the only solution law firms need to manage and grow their practice. Litify is built on Salesforce, giving users access to a robust platform that offers real-time data and the ability to manage your analytics in one place."
How will using Litify make a busy attorney’s day-to-day life easier?
"Through the run of one single day, attorneys are constantly having to tackle high volumes of work in small amounts of time. Caseloads piling up, short deadlines, tracking your time, following matter progress, keeping clients updated & providing them with a positive experience—the days are busy.
By using an all-in-one platform solution for practice management like Litify, attorneys can streamline their workflows to increase productivity and efficiency, reduce the amount of time wasted searching for documents, manually updating case status, chasing down signatures and more."
What updates have been made to Litify over the last year?
"The entire Litify team is committed to moving quickly and adjusting our roadmap to match the needs of the market.
On top of new product releases, we’re also pushing new updates to the core product itself on a monthly basis to improve security features, user experience and the product as a whole."
In the past 4 months alone Litify has already launched and updated:
- Docrio: Complete cloud-based document management software to help law firms confidently manage (and automate) their document systems while working virtually.
- LitifyGo: A turnkey version of the Litify platform designed specifically for law firms needing to quickly transition to remote-first.
- Litify Uplink: Video conferencing software for attorneys to meet with their clients without requiring them to download an app or sign in to any new programs.
- Litify Communities: Dedicated spaces for clients to access and check their case statuses, upload and view documents, and communicate with their attorneys and case team.
- Litify Inbox: A simple tool an entire law firm can use to organize, find and schedule emails and events within Litify—synced with Outlook inboxes and individual calendars.
What’s next for Litify?
"The Litify product roadmap is shaping up really well for this year. We saw a need for an immediate remote solution and were able to launch products in record time to meet that need.
Continued enhancements to Docrio in terms of OCR search capability, new matter financial summaries have already been launched, and more updates are in the works for this year.
We’re continuing to focus on improving the Litify product to fit the needs of every law firm looking to more effectively manage their tasks, time and matters, build more detailed and accurate reports, and future-proof their practice overall."
