How does time of day call forwarding work?

Published: 07.17.25

Time-of-day call forwarding (also called "scheduled forwarding") automatically routes your calls to Answering Legal based on a predefined schedule. (Check with your provider and plan to see if this feature is available to you). Here's a breakdown of how it works and when it's most effective:

What Is Time-of-Day Call Forwarding?

This setup allows your phone system or carrier to automatically forward calls to Answering Legal during specific hours—like after business hours, during lunch breaks, or over weekends. Outside those times, calls ring directly to your office or personal line.

How It Works

  • You define a forwarding schedule—e.g., forward all calls from 5:00 PM to 9:00 AM and on weekends.
  • Your carrier or VoIP system (e.g., RingCentral, Vonage, Nextiva) enforces this schedule automatically.
  • No manual dialing needed—just set and forget.

Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Hands-free once configuredRequires a compatible carrier or VoIP system
Consistent handling after hours or during holidaysLess flexible for ad hoc changes or one-off events
Reduces risk of forgetting to forward manuallyMay need technical help to set up the schedule
Seamless experience for callersLimited by the complexity of the scheduling interface

When to Use Time-Based Forwarding

  • You have predictable office hours.
  • You want all after-hours calls handled automatically.
  • You don't want to manually toggle forwarding every day.
